Be kind, rewind. This used to be a common expression one would see stamped on the outside of a VHS tape. It seems like just yesterday when I would be strolling through Blockbuster with the old man trying to pick out the best movies on the shelf. My dad was never about the “new release” section, who wanted to be responsible for returning a movie 48 hours after you rented it before late fees would be charged? Just putting out some feelers for the audience, does anyone even remember pre-Netflix days? Now for the price of two Blockbuster rentals, we have access to a monthly subscription to a streaming movie library Blockbuster only dreamed about.
VHS tapes have slowly disappeared into the back of the average American’s movie cabinets, shelves, drawers, etc. It seems as if these words of courtesy have followed along with its VHS companion. The simple act of rewinding a VHS tape, what could be easier? Conversely, what is more frustrating than sitting down to watch that movie you just drove down the street to rent, paid $5 for a week rental, microwaved some buttered popcorn (because dad bod is LYFE), only to find out some YOU KNOW WHAT didn’t take the time to rewind your movie! If you’re anything like me, which I guarantee you are since you are HUMAN, sometimes all it takes is one little obnoxious mishap in the day to drive you completely nuts.
This is something I have been working on recently, but I can tell you that it’s not easy for me. Like I mentioned in my last post, it’s all too easy to let these little things accumulate and overload yourself. Knowing this, I have made it a point this past month to focus on the other side of the scenario. Be kind, rewind. Step into the shoes of the person who just finished their movie. What could be easier than to hit that eject button and return that VHS tape? Take advantage of the opportunities you have in your life that may affect someone else for the better, even if you think it’s at an inconvenience to yourself. Be that courteous movie renter who takes the extra 5 minutes to leave that VHS tape the way you found it. Think about how you can positively affect someone this month by being that gold star Blockbuster renter, instead of taking the easy way out and focusing on yourself.
Pro Tip: VHS tapes rewind faster if you press “STOP” then press “I<<.”
