Oh man. Where do I even begin? How do you describe the trip of a lifetime in one single blog post? Let me first start by saying, as some of you may know, that I am a Christian. Traveling to Israel was so much more than a vacation. It was an opportunity to see the places that are mentioned in the Bible, to walk in the places Jesus walked and performed miracles. Israel in general is a beautiful, unique place, but the places we travelled to had much more meaning because of my faith. Because I simply can’t describe every place we went to {you would be here all night}, I picked 6 of my favorite places to share with all of you!
1.Sea of Galilee
This was definitely one of my top two favorite places of the trip. We stayed in a hotel that over looked the sea {they actually call it a lake in Israel} and we traveled to many places by the sea including the Mount of Beatitudes. We had a boat ride on the sea and actually saw a 2000+ year old boat that was found on the Sea of Galilee shores. The Sea of Galilee is the place where Jesus walked on water and it was one of the most peaceful bodies of water I have ever been to.
2.Caeseara
I loved visiting this place because there were so many ancient ruins. We got to tour around one of Herod’s palaces which was so amazing. He had a fresh water pool on the edge of the ocean and the mosaic tiles were still intact! This city was also on the beach of the Mediterranean. I was blown away by the color of the water because it was so many different colors of blue. We ate lunch in this ancient city and the food was amazing. I really miss the food from Israel. It was so healthy which made my little dietitian heart so happy.
3.Beit Shean
This city was actually a Roman city that was part of the Decapoils where Jesus taught. I was speechless and how developed and preserved this place was. You could still see the theater and arena as well as columns that lined the streets. A lot of the city has been restored from earthquakes and weather, but it was still amazing.
4.Place of Dead Sea Scrolls
I’m sure most of you have heard about the dead sea scrolls. If you haven’t, they are ancient hand written copies of the old testament. Unfortunately, the scrolls were not at this place {they are in a museum in another location} but it was amazing to see the caves the scrolls were found in. Israel is covered with caves which was one of the coolest things. Some of these caves were for burial, some were where people hid from the Romans and some were where ancient documents were stored for centuries.
5.Jerusalem
This city was definitely my favorite place. We saw SO many sites here and it was the place that tied everything together. We visited the Temple Mount, the church of the Holy Sepulcher, the mount of Olives and much more. We walked through excavations of King David’s castle and saw pools where Jesus performed miracles. It was amazing to say the least.
6.Gethsemane
If any of you are familiar with the Bible. This is the place of Matthew 26:36-46. The place where Jesus prayed and was betrayed. I don’t think words can describe what it was like being in this place. We read from the Word here and it made verses come to life. This was definitely the most special place of the entire trip.
Hopefully this post gives you a little glimpse into the amazing time I had while visiting Israel. I felt completely safe there and learned a lot about culture, history and even politics. I learned that things are not always as they appear and really appreciate this amazing opportunity that was given to me. If you ever have a chance to travel to Israel, you definitely should!
